- United Artists Midway Stadium 9 || 108-22 Queens Boulevard, Forest Hills, NY 11375 || (718) 544-5545
Often referred to simply as "Midway," this movie theater ALWAYS has the latest blockbusters. Right on Queens Blvd. practically next door to Chase Bank. South Side of Queens Blvd. off the F, E, R, or M @ 71st Continental - Forest Hills, will have you smelling that popcorn from the subway steps. The Q60 also stops basically right in front of the theater (technically Chase, but come on..) After the movie there is a vast array of eateries to choose from - right next door there was once a puppy shop that attracted quite a crowd (Awwe who doesn't love puppies!!) but is now Gloria Pizza that I have heard marvelous things about - will try it in the near future and let you know!
- United Artists Brandon Cinemas 2 || 7020 Austin Street, Forest Hills, NY 11375 || (718) 544-1020
Brandon Cinemas is a smaller theater that often features movies that Midway may have stopped playing and you may find you really wanted to see it, so you still have the chance to catch it, and of course the rare movies that Midway doesn't pick up - you'll find at Brandon. It's got a cozy feeling since it is considerably smaller and features only two movies at a time. It's also VERY near Martha's Bakery which quickly became a sort of Mother Goose of Austin Street considering all the delicious (yet dangerous scale tipper) treats one can find.
- Cinemart Cinemas and Theater Cafe || 106-03 Metropolitan Avenue, Forest Hills, NY 11375 || (718) 261-2244
CC is further inside the Hills, it's on Metropolitan which is the quaintest area and I recommend if you're making the trip to CC, take the walk along 71st/ Continental Avenue; the houses you'll find along this trip are in the Forest Hills Gardens and they are absolutely gorgeous (as a kid I always promised myself I would find a way to live in the Gardens - I will!). It's so private and homey that the walk doesn't feel long and once you hit Metro, it continues feeling homey & sweet. Featuring a variety of restaurants and mom & pop shops that really give you a giddy, Happy Day's community vibe. Walk along Metropolitan after a good movie, stop at Eddie's Sweet Shop, and enjoy a nice stroll. If you find it's too late to walk back, the Q23 will take you to the F, E, R, M subway lines or walk to Woodhaven and you have plenty of bus choices.
- Kew Gardens Cinemas || 81-05 Lefferts Blvd., Kew Gardens, NY 11415 || (718) 441-9835
I personally love Kew Gardens Cinemas, although it is not Forest Hills, ahem ahem, it is still an awesome movie theater. Recently I saw Wes Andersen's Moonrise Kingdom here and will be returning for several other movies. Kew Gardens Cinemas features independent, quirky, special interest films. Definitely films that the other theaters won't have and it saves a trip to all the hip, independent theaters in downtown Manhattan. Once you're on Lefferts you'll find the area is charmingly sweet, and features a short strip of eateries and shops. Plan a weekend afternoon for a good film or documentary & enjoy the vibe. Take the F or E train to Union Turnpike and it's not even a 10 minute walk from Queens Boulevard.
